Got Myself a Taste of San Francisco,
& I’m Salivating for More
Last weekend, I paid my first visit to San Francisco, California. I went to support my one and only curd sister Katie Potts of Petoskey Cheese as she competed in the Olypmics of cheese competitions, The Cheesemonger Invitational (CMI).
CMI is a semiannual competition and educational event for mongers from all over the country. There’s more to it than just blind-tastings, perfect pairings, and all that technical jazz. As the mission statement goes, CMI is “that rare opportunity for amazing cheesemongers to be celebrated by their community.” For a cheesemonger, the weekend is filled with classes, tastings, network-heavy happy hours, and the competition on Sunday, which ends with a few hours of merry partying and cheese-eating for the public while the final mongers compete for the winning trophy.
Naturally, Katie Potts was busy with her Olympic training, so I was on my own to explore the city. I must have walked nearly 30 miles, quietly reflecting on my life and personal goals for the year ahead, while simultaneously becoming infatuated with my surroundings. There is so much culture here this city- and I’m not just referring to the copious selection of fermented drinks and cheese shops. Though I was on my feet for at least 10 hours each day, the sights, sounds, and tastes of the city left me rejuvenated and inspired. I feel ready to take my passion for cheese to a new level, and have recently made it a goal to take a cheese-related trip every month of this year. I want to learn from makers and mongers from all over the country and use my blog to spread their curd words. There’s such a wealth of information behind the counter and within the creameries, and I’m hungry to get at it.
My destinations include a return to San Francisco (there is a lot to see), a couple trips to NYC, a handful of local creamery visits, and much more. Clearly, I have a lot of planning to do. If you have any suggestions or want to be featured as a maker or a monger on Cheese Sex Death, leave me a comment below!
