Cleanse without killing yourself
Everybody is about cleanses these days, but I’m just not down with fasting. If that’s part of your religious tradition, that’s one thing, but depriving myself of food to lose weight or “detox” just doesn’t gel with my chia seeds. The James Beard Awards took place in Chicago last night. The weekend leading up to it contained a series of food and drink-filled parties, some of which I was lucky enough to attend. Over a period of about 72 hours, I gorged myself with various cured meats. As amazing and orgasmic experience as that was, I’m not feeling so cute right now. All the salt and fat have caused somewhat of a meat hangover. Clearly I need to do something about this, in addition to my usual plant-based, cheese-enhanced diet.
You don’t have to purchase a subscription to expensive juice cleansing plans or starve yourself. If you’re feeling bloated and constipated, just drink a glass of warm water with lemon juice first thing in the morning. Warm lemon water aids with digestion, strengthens immunity, and improves morning breath, among many other benefits. It also helps to increase your intake of fresh fruits and vegetables, stay hydrated through out the day, and engage in plenty of cardiovascular activity.
- 8 oz warm filtered water.
- 1/2 a small lemon
- Combine water and lemon in a glass. Sip slowly.
- You can also thinly slice a lemon, layer the pieces between sheets of wax paper, and freeze. Put the lemon in your iced tea or seltzer for a little extra cleansing between meals.
- Repeat indefinitely. I do it almost every morning.
