You Don’t Need a Fridge for Your Lunch
When You’ve Got Aged Cheese.
Are you too busy to make yourself a nutritious, portable lunch everyday? Is ordering out breaking the bank? Do you hate using the employee fridge because everyone steals your lunch? That’s weird that they steal your lunch, because they don’t know how gross you really are. When I make a PB&J, I lick the knife before I put it back in the jar for more peanut butter. I also have a longhair cat, who I refer to as my “sous chef” because he likes to watch me cook. Basically, you just stole a spit and cat fur sandwich.
Don’t use the fridge at work, but don’t skip lunch either. You’re better at your job when your tummy is full. If you eat aged cheese for lunch, you can keep it in your pocket away from sticky fingers. Aged cheese doesn’t need refrigeration, just a cool, dry environment like an air conditioned office. Wrap a 2 ounce wedge of cheese and pack a sack of almonds and fresh fruit and keep it in your pocket. Now you’ve got a healthy lunch that no one will steal.
Are there too many delicious aged cheeses in the world for you for you to choose just one? Understandable. Here’s a list of some of my favorite portable pocket cheeses that you can find just about anywhere, even Trader Joe’s. Remember to always enjoy at room temperature.
A classic aged gouda is sweet like caramel and perfect with your afternoon cup of tea or coffee. It’s got a lip-smacking texture and toothsome crystals. It’s sort of like the crunchy peanut butter of cheese. Enjoy it with raw pecans and fresh stone fruits like apricots.
You can find a good cheddar just about anywhere, so if you forget your lunch at home just stop by the nearest grocery store for an apple and a block like Kerrygold Irish cheddar. Keep some local clover honey at your desk to make it extra healthy.
The king of cheese has 11g of protein and it’s always delicious. You should always have this artisanal classic on hand for snacking, salads, and shaving on top of roast vegetables. Try it with raw almonds, pears, or grapes.
This wonderful little sheep milk cheese is the official cheese of Don Quixote, so you know it travels well. Pair the tangy, nutty flavors with some dried figs or salted marcona almonds.
This alpine cheese was my favorite pocket snack from my cheese monger days. It’s crazy delicious and breaks cleanly, so it won’t leave you with linty cheese crumbles in your pocket. The sweet, rich flavors are perfect alongside tart, juicy berries like fresh blackberries or dried cherries.
