A little over a month ago, I took my boyfriend to Sun Wah BBQ to celebrate his 24th birthday over the Beijing duck feast. The deal costs $40 for two diners and includes an unholy amount of food: it’s the ultimate budget date night package. Get yourself a bottle of dry red wine and ready yourself for duck mania.
Here’s how Sun Wah does duck: a full barbecued bird is carted to your table and hand-carved before your eyes. The process is mesmerizing and incredibly efficient. Once the duck meat is shingled onto a plate, it’s soon surrounded by pickled veggies, steamed buns, hoisin sauce, fried rice and a soup made out of the duck carcass. The duck meat is so juicy and flavorful, you’ll soon find yourself addicted. The fried rice is greasy and pretty average, but still tasty. Beware of the tiny bones and cartilage that are a float in the soup!
Everything is really tasty and unless you come in starving, you will have leftovers. The deal also covers sorbet for two, which they promptly ran out of before we received out share. I was a little disappointed that our server did not offer us a substitute, so I felt a little bit cheated. But even without the sorbet, it’s a wonderful meal and I highly recommend it!
Price: $40 for the duck special, plus $5 wine corkage
